Twenty two walkers gathered at the long lay-by between Dronfield and Unstone for a walk in the Summerley and Apperknowle area with the purpose of identifying locations that once were public houses.
We set off following the Dronfield Barn Round Walk through the fields to Summerey Lower Road. After crossing another field and reaching Summerley Road, Richard, our walk leader, pointed out the first lost pub alongside the footpath leading to the airfield. After crossing the airfield we soon discovered another lost pub, formerly the “Inn at Trowey” which has recently been converted to private dwellings.
The next pub was very much still alive and well, “The Traveller’s Rest” at Apperknowle. Here we had our lunch break and some of us were tempted by the famous cheese platter, sandwiches and soup.
I was one of the group who stopped at the pub whilst the main party continued on past the “Yellow Lion” and “Barrack” pubs which are now houses. The group visited more lost pubs on their way back to the start point, including “Unstone Miners Welfare”, “The Fleur de Lys”, “Bay Chillders” and the original “Horse and Jockey”
