The Source of the Moss (5th June 2025)

Ten walkers and one dog met in the public car park below Coal Aston Village Hall. We expected some showers followed by dryer conditions but almost on the stroke of 7pm there was a torrential downpour. We sheltered for a few minutes and then started our walk as the intensity of the rain fell.

We made our way to Cross Lane (not the one off Green Lane, the other one) and headed down through fields to the former site of the sports pavilion on Jordanthorpe Parkway. After walking on the fringes of the estate we entered Coal Pit Wood and soon came across the two brooks that come together to form the source of the river Moss. We paused here for a while to hear Graham’s explanation of the all the rivers involved in the water’s journey to the North Sea.

We next walked the full length of Long Wood which led us to our coffee stop in the meadow known as Dowey Lumb. From this point we crossed back over the Moss and walked up to the Rotary bench. Our Journey back to the Village hall was via Sicklebrook Lane and Eckington Road.

Many thanks to Graham for leading us on this very enjoyable walk.
