Staveley and the Chesterfield Canal (21 May 2026)

Twenty walkers and three dogs met at Hollingwood Hub ready for Joe’s four mile walk along the Chesterfield Canal. We appear to be at the start of a very hot and dry period so it was shirt sleeves for most of us.

We walked along the canal towpath (Trans Pennine Trail) seeing lots of wildlife including two Canada Geese with their seven goslings. On reaching the Staveley basin we passed in front of the new building named “The Moorings” that now houses several business units with space for a cafe/restaurant. We walked over the new Trans Pennine Trail bridge and viewed the restoration work that is going on at the bottom of Bellhouse Lane. We stopped just after the new bridge for brief drinks break before continuing our journey.

As we passed through Staveley on our way back we paid a visit to Staveley Hall admiring the the plaque over the front door which features the 1604 date and Sir Peter Frecheville’s status as a Knight of the Realm. After crossing a bridge over the canal we were back on our original path, returning to Hollingwood Hub just before the sun started to set.

Many thanks to Joe for leading us on this lovely walk. Because of the on-going restoration work it is an ever-changing picture.
