Eighteen walkers met in the car park close to the Hollingwood hub. The skies were grey and light showers were forecast. We started out by following the canal towpath which is also part of the Trans Pennine Trail. Walking on the towpath was a treat because we avoided any muddy areas.
When we reached Staveley Canal Basin we stopped briefly by the new building that is part of The Moorings project which will bring new office and retail space to the site. The project is part of the Staveley Town Deal and you can find out more information on this by clicking this link.
In a short time we crossed over the new Trans Pennine Trail bridge which was formally opened on the 6th of December 2024. You can read more about its opening here. We then followed a track running parallel to Ireland Close, which we crossed later on to take us into Staveley town. When we reached the church, our leader Joe told us about its history along with some of the other historic buildings in this area. We completed the loop by rejoining the Trans Pennine Trail and for the remainder of the walk we retraced our steps on the towpath all the way back to Hollingwood Hub
We thanked Joe for a lovely walk. It’s always nice to visit this area and see see how the canal renovation is progressing.
