Old Whittington and Hundall (April 19th 2025)

Twenty two walkers met for Clive and Judy’s Easter walk. We crossed the railway bridge and across fields to reach a pond and an area known as “Four Acres”. Across a few more fields and we arrived at St Bartholomew’s church in Old Whittington. After following paths around the church we emerged into a series of fields that took us all the way up to the entrance to Grasscoft Woods. Those of us who had been on Clive’s walk before knew that this meant a coffee break and not only that it also meant chocolates, curtesy of Judy (yum)

After crossing some very large fields we crossed Long Lane towards the hamlet of West Handley. We then started our journey back by once again crossing Long Lane, heading for Hundall. We knew that the Saturday between Good Friday and Easter Sunday was traditionally the date of the “Wards of Troway Charity Tractor Run” but in the past we have been too early to see it. Today however was our lucky day because as we approached the Miners’ Arms at Hundall we could see people waiting in anticipation of the run. It was very impressive with around 120 tractors of all shapes and sizes passing by. Not to mention the Dukes of Hazzard General Lee Dixie Horn.

From Hundall we dropped down into Ramshaw Wood and under the viaduct back to our start point. It was a really excellent walk with the added bonus of the tractors. Many thanks to Clive and Judy for leading us round.
