Chesterfield Canal Restoration Work (8th April 2025)

Twenty walkers met in Morrisons’ car park at Staveley ready for David’s walk.

We walked up to the canal towpath known as Cuckoo Way and made our first stop at Staveley canal basin where work is nearly complete on the Waterside Building that will house business units, workshops and cafes. After leaving the towpath we continued on through fields to the Norbriggs Flash Nature Reserve which had a well hidden hide to view waterfowl on the nearby lake.

Continuing on, we walked on the Norbriggs Cutting, an abandoned section of the canal that has been completely taken over by nature. On our return leg we walked over the new Transpennine Trail bridge which was installed in October 2024.

Our return to Morrisons took us past the grand Staveley hall and the impressive church. Unfortunately this report only touches on the comprehensive updates that David gave to us during the walk but if you want to find out more there are lots of interesting videos on the internet about on-going restoration work.

Many thanks to David for leading us on this extremely interesting walk.
