Seventeen walkers and three dogs gathered in Holmesfield Village Hall car park in readiness for the walk. We started by crossing the main road that passes through Holmesfield and took the track down the fields by the George and Dragon pub. At the five ways signpost we took a right turn across fields to Horsleygate. At the junction of two paths we took the uphill route to cross over Horsleygate Lane and enter the caravan park. From here it was uphill through fields to Lydgate where we once again crossed the main road.
After a short stretch on the pavement we turned down Moorwood Lane. Here we could see GHB Ward’s old house, now known as Storth Lodge on our right but as the road took a bend to the left we continued on down a manicured track past Storth House (not to be confused with Storth Lodge!)
We were now heading for Gillfield Wood. This is a good place to spot a herd of dear and on this occasion we got a very good view of them. After entering the wood we turned right and continued on until we met the Sheffield Country Walk. This took us out of the woods and up to the impressive Woodthorpe Hall.
The last leg of the walk took us through Holmesfield Park Wood and back to our cars. During the walk we had a short drinks break and a longer coffee stop but I can’t quite remember where!
We managed to get back long before the predicted showers arrived and even the dogs were relatively mud free. Many thanks to Steve and Ros for guiding us round.
