Historic Halls of Holmesfield (15th February 2025)

This walk, led by Steve and ably assisted by Ros, is always popular with our members and on this occasion twenty two people and two dogs met up in Holmesfield Village Hall car park.

Before starting the walk Steve gave us an overview of the walk, mentioning that we would be visiting six of the historic halls in the Holmesfield area. We started with Holmesfield Hall which is set back from the road and not easily spotted. We then took the easy access path down to Woodthorpe Hall and then up the road to Fanshawe gate Hall. At each of these Steve gave us a brief history and other interesting facts relevant to the individual halls.

We then climbed the fields to Lydgate where we crossed the Owler Bar road and descended towards Horsleygate. It was then on to the first of the two Horsleygate Halls, the “new” Horsleygate Hall at the bottom of the lane. We then walked up the lane to the “old” Horsleygate Hall before descending through the caravan park. After crossing a series of fields we ended up at the last and oldest of the halls, Cartledge Hall with neighbouring Cartledge Grange.

After the walk some of us called in at the Moorlands Inn to sample their carvery or Pizza. Many thanks to Steve for leading the walk and for passing on his knowledge.
