Twenty two walkers gathered at the Wesleyan Reform Church in Coal Aston in readiness for Adrian’s walk. Adrian had decided not to walk in the Moss Valley owing to the predicted mud and tricky underfoot conditions. Instead we walked mainly in the Unstone and Summerley areas.
Starting out in light drizzle we took an urban path through the Holmesdale estate, which included some cut-throughs that I wasn’t aware of. We then skirted Frith Wood by taking the track that is accessed from Stonelow Road and emerges onto Calleywhite Lane.
Rather than heading directly up to Summerley we headed for the main road next to the old Harrison’s Works building. After walking slightly uphill towards Dronfield we took the track past Unstone hall. To keep the walk to a manageable distance Adrian lead us down a grassy track that crossed the railway line by Unstone’s former station. We were now heading to Apperknowle, taking the tramway route that runs past the end of St John’s Road. This is where we stopped and had our coffee break.
The final stretch of the walk took us along Summerley Lower road and back to our starting point via The Ridings and Barnard Avenue.
Thanks very much to Adrian for leading us on the walk which we all enjoyed and we avoided the mud.
