Monk Wood and Barlow Lees (1st August 2024)

Twenty walkers and two dogs set out from Cowley Mission on a very warm Thursday evening. The first part of the walk took us across fields to Lees Common and then into Monk Wood. We almost reached the Curly Bridge over the by-pass but carried on to exit the wood close to Monkwood farm. From here we continued across fields to reach a woodland are close to Barlow Fishing Ponds. This was our nominated drinks stop which was appreciated on such a warm and humid evening.

After crossing Barlow Brook we joined Keepers Lane, taking the stile at the far end that leads into a field. Soon we entered the top end of the fishing ponds, taking a path between two ponds. As we entered the wood at the other side of the ponds our biggest challenge on the walk awaited, a steep uphill section with some steps. Although any conversation ceased for a few minutes we all made it to the top, needing just a few minutes to regain our composure.

The route back to the Mission via Barlow Lees seemed to take no time at all.

Many thanks to Steve and Ros for leading us on this walk. We all agreed it was a lovely walk in nice weather.
