Horsleygate, Lydgate, Gillfield Wood and Woodthorpe Hall (16th March 2024)

Seventeen walkers met in Holmesfield Village Hall’s car park in bright sunshine and blue skies. Our leaders Steve and Ros warned us that there were seventeen stiles on the walk but undeterred, we set off down a track next to the George and Dragon. The first section of the walk formed a loop taking us down to Horsleygate and then up to Lydgate where we crossed the main road going into Holmsfield.

We continued down the road for a short stretch and then turned right onto Moorwood lane where Steve spoke to us about GHB Ward who was a pioneer rambler and secretary of the Clarion Ramblers. GHB Ward lived at Storth Lodge which we could see from our viewing point.

After walking through a couple of fields we entered Gillfield Wood where Wood Anemones were on display. Almost at the far end of the wood we took a turning that led us up a steep field, bringing us out at Woodthorpe Hall. It was now just a short journey through Holmesfield Woods back to our start point.

Many thanks to Steve and Ros for leading us on a very enjoyable walk.
