Totley Moss – Totley Bents – Holmesfield (4th April 2023)

Seventeen of us gathered at Holmesfield Village Hall on a crisp but sunny spring day. The walk initially took us through Holmesfield woods and onto Fanshaw Gate Lane. After dropping down onto Moorwood Lane we passed Storth Lodge, home of walkers’ rights campaigner and founder of the Clarion Ramblers, GHB Ward.

The climb onto the moors began after crossing the main road to Sheffield and soon we were able to see terrific views of Sheffield and although visibility was a little hazy we could see the landmarks of the Hallamshire Hospital and the Arts Tower. The views continued en route to Wimble Holme Hill after which we turned back towards Totley. Before reaching a brief urban section of the route we stopped for lunch where I enjoyed a hand-crafted cheese and beetroot sandwich.

The end of our descent from the moors meant only one thing, it was going to be uphill from here on in. Having said that the ascent was gradual rather than lung-busting. In no time at all we arrived back at the starting point where we thanked Hilary and Ann for a fantastic walk.
